Welcome to SMART      

Based at the Department of Agriculture, the State of Maine Animal Response Team (SMART) is a public/private partnership that developed from the need to improve animal emergency response capacity in Maine. SMART represents the combined interest of public health, agriculture, emergency management, humane groups and the veterinary profession in providing a cohesive and effective approach to animal related disaster events, including zoonotic disease scenarios. 

SMART had its inception in June, 2004 and is modeled after North Carolina SART and Colorado SART.  SMART has a Director and Training Coordinator, a Steering Committee representing nine state agencies and private organizations, and an advisory group of federal, state and local stakeholders.

SMART has a half-time staff person, a Steering Committee of 17 representatives from state agencies and private organizations, and an advisory group representing over 60 federal, state and local stakeholders.
